The United coach has faith in the 18-year-old and feels he will bring something fresh to the team if called upon after demonstrating he can play in the “sweeper keeper” role.
The teenager is on standby for the Magpies’ long trip to AFC Bournemouth this weekend with Rob Elliot doubtful for the clash on the south coast.
Simpson told NUFC TV: “We know what Freddie Woodman is all about, he’s a top class young goalkeeper.
“He’s had a little taste of football experience with his trip out to Crawley.
“We have long-term ideas about where Freddie will be.
“He is going to be a top goalkeeper, and hopefully at this club.
“We are working with him, Simon Smith works with him.
“He showed that in the reserve game.
“He played the sweeper keeper role very well and came off his line on a number of occasions and tidied things up.
“He’s got good distribution and he’s a good talker.”
Newcastle have Tim Krul and Karl Darlow out injured at the moment.
Darlow could be a week away from a return but Krul is out for the rest of the season.
