The 28-year-old has recently returned to the Chile national squad after a period of self-imposed exile and is keen to find a club where he can become a first team regular in order to further his international ambitions.
Acuna’s agent recently claimed that Sporting Lisbon were keen to sign him, but a move to Mexico now looks to be a more likely option.
"To play is my passion and if they (Newcastle) don’t allow me to I must consider other options," he said.
"One of the options is Cruz Azul, and that would be very good for me because Mexican football has improved a lot."
If Acuna does leave this summer it will be with the best wishes of most fans, as although he has failed to make as bigger impact as he would have liked at St James’ Park nobody can question the commitment and effort he has shown when given the chance.
