The Coca-Cola League Two strugglers parted company with Colin Todd after their 1-1 draw at Grimsby on Saturday - the second point picked up all season.
Youth team boss Liddle, who played more than 300 games for the club between 1998 and 2005, has been appointed caretaker manager for Tuesday night's game at home to Rochdale, while centre of excellence manager Maddison, who made over 100 appearances for his hometown club, will assist.
Chairman Raj Singh said: "Craig and Neil know the club inside out and are highly thought of both within the club and by our fans, so they're the obvious people to take immediate charge of the team while we consider our options.
"We do expect to receive a high calibre of applicants for the job and we've already had a number of people throw their hat into the ring.
"We want to appoint someone who will excite the fans but who will also do the business, as we think we already have a squad capable of doing much better than we are at the moment."
