Allardyce's New Full-Back Could Already Be On The Books

The Toon boss hopes to make at least one transfer breakthrough this week (but says he wants FOUR), and insists he still needs at least three new defenders before the season starts on August 11.

Celestine Babayaro has undergone a hernia operation, and N'Zogbia appears to have more pace and vision than Peter Ramage and certainly more experience than Paul Huntington. He played in that position at Carlisle on Saturday and seemed settled there. Although, it has to be said, he didn't have the likes of Tevez, Robben or Giggs running at him like he would in the Premiership.

Allardyce: "Charles N'Zogbia arguably could be the best left back this club has on its books at the moment playing like that.

"For him, and me, it was an opportunity to see him give a terrific performance in that position.

"He did everything the right way. He made fewer mistakes than a lot of his team-mates, he created a lot of great opportunities for us coming from deep and defensively where I thought he might get caught out - and perhaps might in the Premiership - he did not get caught out.

"I think it could be a good position for him if he wants to play there. Some people have said he may not be comfortable with it but he should be comfortable with any position.

"But I need players in. I've been saying for weeks I need three or four defenders so if I don't get them I'm bound to be concerned."
