Moussa Sissoko is facing up to three weeks on the sidelines as manager Alan Pardew contends with a worsening injury crisis.
The Frenchman will miss Saturday's Barclays Premier League clash with Manchester United because of a hamstring strain, and will join goalkeeper Tim Krul (shoulder), full-back Mathieu Debuchy (groin) and sriker Loic Remy (calf) on the casualty list.
However, both Krul and Remy are improving and could be available for the trip to Stoke on April 12, while midfielder Sammy Ameobi (knee) is back in training.
Centre-backs Chris Smalling (hamstring) and Jonny Evans (calf) have returned to training and are available for Manchester United's game at Newcastle on Saturday.
Full-back Rafael (thigh) and midfielder Ryan Giggs (hamstring) are doubts, but left-back Alex Buttner (hamstring) is available.
Juan Mata and Patrice Evra return after sitting out the 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich, but striker Robin van Persie (knee) is not fit.
