“But you don’t throw them in at the deep end in such a severe test against France.
“If you call up Joey Barton he is experienced enough to deal with the game.
“Everything that can happen to you on a football field has happened to Joey.
“I think it was Kevin Keegan who said you need 10 caps before you can consider yourself an international.
“You can’t give young players too much, too soon then make a judgement on them.
“It’s obvious if you give a youngster too much, too young they can fall apart.
“We had some good examples – Rio Ferdinand came in gradually and Michael Owen – but not all of them can just come in and rise to the occasion.”
