Manager Lee Clark wants his former Newcastle and Fulham teammate to pass on his goalscoring expertise to strikers Jordan Rhodes,Theo Robinson, Lee Novak and Robbie Simpson.
Cole is the second highest scorer in Premier League history with 187 goals (behind Alan Shearer on 260).
He has been working with another old teammate, Paul Ince, at MK Dons.
But Clark is optimistic he can get Manchester-based Cole on board, saying: “I think he has a lot to offer.
“His goalscoring record speaks for itself. He is a master of the art, and I think our players, especially the frontmen, would really benefit from his guidance.
“We got on well as players and we’ve kept in close touch over the years. The plan is to talk over the next few days and see what we can work out.”

UPDATE ON THIS ARTICLE -
Huddersfield boss Lee Clark saw his side demolish 10-man Brighton 7-1 - and then revealed Andy Cole has been appointed to coach his strikers.
Theo Robinson scored twice to add to goals from Peter Clarke, Antony Kay, Lee Novak, Gary Roberts and Danny Drinkwater after former Newcastle and Manchester United star Cole visited the Town dressing room.
Cole has also offered his services to League One rivals MK Dons, where he is working in a similar role with their manager Paul Ince.
Town boss Clark said: "Goalscoring was an area we had to address from last season. We created a lot of chances but had nobody to put the ball in the net.
"Even though we have that in spades now, they are young players who can only get better with the influence of somebody like Andy Cole.
"Robinson reminds me of a young Cole and Novak has impressed everybody with his work rate and skill and we are lucky to have them all.
"I must be one of the few managers in the lower leagues who relishes having to field seven substitutes because of the strength and depth we have, especially up front."
