Newcastle United boss Joe Kinnear has allegedly asked Rangers - via an agent - if he can take the former Portsmouth and Tottenham midfielder on loan with a view to a £1.5million move.

Mendes, twice capped by Portugal, is apparently happy at Ibrox.

So don't read too much into this bit of media speculation.
