Bob Moncur: “I’m talking about signings like Kevin Keegan and Alan Shearer – when you look back nobody thought that Newcastle could get them, but they did.
“Perhaps players of that calibre are out of sight these days.
“I feel sorry for Chris Hughton in some ways because he doesn’t have the sort of money to spend on the big names.
“But I also understand where Mike Ashley is coming from, and he wants to get the club on an even keel once again.
“I’m not saying go out and spend like Man City or Spurs, because it’s not possible, but I think the signing of a big name player would be beneficial for everybody at the club."
