And we wonder what Nile Ranger could have achieved if only he had the will to graft ... and an IQ in double figures.
Ranger and Campbell are like chalk and cheese. One couldn't give a fliying f***; while the other would give his right arm to pull on the black and white shirt.
Adam Campbell: “It’s nice to know the manager is going to give you a chance if he can.
“If he thinks you are good enough, he will. It makes you want to work harder so that he can’t not play you really. It gives everybody a lift.
“Not just me, everybody in the Academy and reserves knows if they work hard enough then the manager will give you your chance and you will get in there.
“When I first started watching Newcastle we had a great team.
“Nobby Solano, Alan Shearer, Clarence Acuna, Laurent Robert and people like that. I’ve obviously seen the videos of beating Man United 5-0.
“But I think my greatest memories of watching Newcastle was when Sir Bobby Robson was manager we played in the Champions League. I’ll never forget the Feyenoord game when we won 3-2 in the last minute.
“The 8-0 v Sheff Wed is all in there too. My very first match away from home was when Alan Shearer scored a couple and I was actually mascot that game.
“That was my first football away game and it was brilliant.
“I have had a taste for it ever since.
“You come in, day-in, day-out and see legends like Peter Beardsley.
“You almost think ‘It’s Pete’, but then you think of all his goals and everything he done in his career.
“It is great to have role models like that to look up to like that.
“I’m just looking to get into it and get on the bench.
“If I can get on a few times it would give me the perfect platform to work from next season.
“It isn’t about me getting a game, we have good players here already. I will just keep working.
“The Football Foundation played a huge part in my education. I used to go on the summer courses during the summer holidays.
“I was there every time I could. It helped improve me as a player."
