And Merson believes that Newcastle could now put their foot down, and cruise to the title this season.
“I can’t see anything but Newcastle going up,” the former Arsenal midfielder said. “But they have three very difficult away games coming up. That’ll be the making or breaking of Newcastle. If they win all three, they’ll win the league by 12 points.”
Newcastle have matches against Aston Villa and Bristol City at home next up, and Rafael Benitez’s side will be eager to take six points against the strugglers, before his side go into a very tough run of fixtures.
The Magpies are schedule to face Brighton & Hove Albion, Huddersfield Town and Reading away from home in consecutive weeks, in what will be a real test of their quality.
