There were many "absent friends" at St James' Park on Saturday ... over 5,000 in fact ... and our reporter points the blame on ex-Spurs fan Ashley.
Michael Owen and Shay Given gave Newcastle supporters a lot to tell shout about as we stand two points behind Premiership leaders Liverpool, but it is the off-field antics of Ashley that has a question mark hanging over his head.
Ashley Gimmicks Have Fans Wondering!
In spite of incentives like free booze for those who got in their bar-room orders up to 50 minutes before the kick-off; complimentary tickets to schoolchildren and cash entrance money for the first time in years, the match was played before 47,711 - the lowest first-game attendance at St James' Park since the ground was extended in 2000.
There were almost 5,000 empty seats at a club where there used to have a 17,000 waiting list for season tickets.
We know over 100 fans personally who failed to renew season tickets this season, and we were told of 24 sponsors who have failed to take up the options on boxes at St James' Park.
It is a worry to Ashley, who invited the sponsors to a meeting last week, but his personal appearance didn't impress many.
Clearly the Toon Army are not convinced - an unthinkable scenario when you consider fans favourite Special 'K' is at the helm.
