Barton was today told he can leave St James’s Park on a free transfer.
Barton yesterday aired his frustrations at the club’s direction on Twitter and Mike Ashley has reacted today by kicking him out of the club!
The midfielder – who has a year left on his contract – left Elland Road frustrated after Newcastle put in a half-hearted performance against Leeds United.
Steven Taylor questioned the attitude of certain players, saying "this is NOT good enough" and Jose Enrique is said to be ready to ask Ashley to drop the value of his transfer so he can join Liverpool.
Nile Ranger has "fallen out" with Alan Pardew and was sent to play with the Youth Team at Spennymoor on Saturday, adding to more frustration at the club.
Barton, like unsettled colleague Jose Enrique, is said to be frustrated with the club’s transfer policy.
Barton used social networking site to hint at unrest in the United ranks, and said Enrique’s controversial Twitter comments were the “tip of the iceberg”.
In a series of tweets, Barton said: “If only we as players could tell the fans exactly how it is, without them above fining us lots of money. There will be a time and a place.
“If it wouldn’t effect team morale and cause unrest within the dressing room, am certain Jose’s comments would be the tip of the iceberg ...
“And again it would be left to those magnificent fans to pick up the remnants of their once great football club.
“If I wanted to leave, I’d just come out and say “I want to leave.” Things need addressing as am not prepared to go through a relegation again.”
Barton said on Twitter he would make an announcement on his future later today.
A statement from the club said: “Newcastle United can confirm that Joey Barton has been placed on the transfer list today.
“The player has been advised that he can leave the club on a free transfer.”
