Ashley gave a rare interview in which he claimed he would not sell the club until they had won something, and was praised for former Toon boss Graeme Souness who was working alongside Carragher as a pundit for Sky Sports.
Souness spoke positively about Ashley’s interview believing he ‘spoke well’ but Carragher, who has criticised Ashley in the past, was not impressed.
He said: “Let’s not get carried away because a chairman done an interview. Why has it taken him so long?
“He’s said about from now they are going to try and win a trophy, but why just now? Why not the day you first came in?”
He continued: “It’s his decisions. Last year he sold Yohan Cabaye and brought no replacements in.
“He’s happy for the club to just float.”
