Dean Ashton was the target of Sir Bobby Robson and Graeme Souness, and BOTH made offers for the former Crewe striker, as well as Glenn Roeder.But, like Craig Bellamy who snubbed Newcastle to sign for Coventry (God forbid!), Newcastle have not given up hope (IF you believe The Sun).
Bellamy took the long route to St James' Park, and Ashton could too.
Robson said that Ashton was a clone of Alan Shearer ... same balance and strength, with a deadly eye for goal.
But injuries have hit the West Ham player for a couple of years and the Hammers have yet to see the best of him.
But the link with Newcastle will continue because 18 months ago Ashton spoke up when the London club knocked back the Toon's interest, saying "I am honoured such a great club as Newcastle have shown an interest in me".
