Newcastle United overtook Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day of the Championship season and Ayoze Perez has admitted to the Shields Gazette that Newcastle United got lucky to win the Championship.
Newcastle ended up finishing on top of the second tier, after a dramatic finish to the Championship season.
The Magpies needed to better Brighton & Hove Albion’s result on the final day of the campaign to finish at the top of the table.
And, despite being 3-0 up against Barnsley, it seemed that Newcastle would have to make do with second spot up until the last minute.
Brighton were 1-0 up against Aston Villa, but a late Jack Grealish goal stopped the Seagulls taking the title home.
And Perez said: “If I’m being honest, I think we got a little bit lucky – Brighton let us off the hook a little bit to let us in.
“But, football has a funny way of repaying you.
“I think we’ve had a few harsh decisions go against us, especially in some games.”
Brighton looked to have the title within their grasp, but a terrible run after they secured promotion allowed Newcastle to capitalise.
And Rafael Benitez’s men seized the opportunity, to earn promotion in style.
Newcastle are now set to take a well-earned break, ahead of next season - with optimism high at St. James’ Park.
