Despite the sacking of coach Louis van Gaal Barcelona were hammered 3-0 by Atletico Madrid, with Fernando Torres, Emerson and Jose Garcia Calvo doing the damage.
Both sides had a player dismissed, Fabio Rochemback for Barca and Jose Maro for Madrid, and the Catalans are now down to 15th in Primera Liga.
Bayer Leverkusen also look set for relegation after another defeat, this time at the hands of Borussia Dortmund.
Brazilian Ewerthon put Dortmund in front after only three minutes and three minutes later Leverkusen’s Yildiray Basturk was dismissed for a bad foul on the goalscorer.
Facing 84 minutes with just ten men Leverkusen did well to keep the score down to 2-0, giant Czech striker Jan Koller grabbing the second.
Last season’s Champions League finalists are now just a point above the Bundesliga relegation zone.
Inter bucked the trend though with a 2-0 win at struggling Torino, thanks to second-half strikes from Christian Vieri and Buruk Okan.
The result keeps Inter in second place in the Serie A table, trailing local rivals AC Milan on goal difference.
