The volatile midfielder snatches the record from Aston Villa’s Ciaran Clark and Newcastle’s Cheick Tiote who had managed six consecutive bookings.
The 32-year-old picked up the crucial seventh booking late on during the 2-0 victory at Sunderland on Tuesday.
The three points picked up at the Stadium of Light were QPR’s first on their travels this season as they moved out of the bottom three.
Barton, a former Newcastle player, couldn’t help rub in the result on Twitter by taunting Sunderland fans.
He tweeted: ‘Always nice to win. Especially when it's against 5under1and..,’ referring to the 5-1 derby win over Sunderland during his time at Newcastle in 2010.
Barton has clashed with Sunderland supporters several times on social media since departing St James' Park and regularly refers back to the 5-1 triumph in 2010.
