Brugge are in freefall after losing five games on the spin in all competitions, and parted company with Georges Leekens over the weekend.
Brugge caretaker boss Philippe Clement has dismissed talk Club Brugge players stopped playing for axed manager Georges Leekens (pictured right).
Former Brugge star Clement – who was Leekens’ reserve-team chief – has now been thrust into the biggest game of his life as a coach against Newcastle United tomorrow night.
Clement: “I do not believe there were saboteurs who wanted Leekens out of the club.
“However, there were groups in the squad who were like islands.
“The commitment of some of those players on the islands was limited.
“We must now get back to playing as a unit again.
“It is a challenge for me, of course.
“However, I have experience of the players, some of whom I have worked with as defensive coach.
“I know the players and the staff here, so at least I have time.
“I don’t look beyond the next game, but I am prepared for longer.
“Many players are on the sick list but it is OK because I always liked puzzles when I was a child!”
