According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United are hoping to secure deals for a defender and a midfielder before Saturday.
The Magpies have been busy in the transfer window so far, bringing in four new faces to the club.
Goalkeeper Matz Sels was the first arrival, before Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie and then Jesus Gamez all made the move to St James’ Park.
They are keen to get more faces in for the season in the Championship, with manager Rafa Benitez keen to build a squad capable of securing an instant return to the Premier League.
And according to the Chronicle, the Spanish boss is looking to secure a midfielder and at least one other defender before they take on Irish side Bohemians on Saturday.
It is no surprise to find that a defender is top of Benitez’s wish list given how poorly that area of the team has performed in recent years.
With Fabricio Coloccini also departing the club to return to Argentina with San Lorenzo, the need for reinforcements has also taken on added significance.
Who Newcastle target remains to be seen, although it appears at least one of their options is Blackburn Rovers defender Grant Hanley according to the Chronicle.
