Benitez penned a three-year deal at St. James’ Park, but he reportedly has a release clause, which can be activated should the club get relegated.
Moncur admitted he was impressed with the former Real Madrid manager.
He told the Scotsman (via the Newcastle Chronicle): “I like Rafa. He’s a football man, very sincere, and he looks you straight in the eye. I told him it would reflect well on him if he didn’t just walk away.
“But I couldn’t quite get the answer I was looking for, other than: ‘Bob, we won’t be relegated.’ I told him that impressed me, although had to add that I’ve seen more of this team than him and know what they can be like.”
They are just three points behind Norwich City in 17th with a game in hand though, and they face the Canaries in one of the biggest games of the season so far at Carrow Road after the international break.
