Enrique's big-money move from Villarreal in August last year brought great expectations, but the 22-year-old has yet to cut it in the Premiership and Kevin Keegan is looking for a left-back.

Beresford: "I can understand where Kevin's coming from - he needs competition for places.

"Jose Enrique's got to show what he can do next season.

"He was a big-name signing, and towards the end of the season he started to show signs that he can play. He started to show how good a player he is.

"I'd say he's a more orthodox left-back. He's strong, and has got a good left foot. He looks to get forward a bit, but he's not got that much pace.

"He does get forward, but doesn't often create things in the final third. He tends to back play up, but I don't think that would put Kevin off.

"In the Premiership, full-backs have quite a lot of the ball, and in certain games, it's up to them to make things happen.

"There are some good left-backs out there, and I think it would be a perfect opportunity for Nicky Shorey, and the perfect opportunity for Newcastle United.

"And Kevin has to decide whether he's going to sign an up and coming player, or the finished article.

"If he signed someone like Nicky Shorey, or even Wayne Bridge from Chelsea, they're not going to be an understudy to Jose Enrique.

"When I was there, Robbie Elliott was understudy to me, but that was different, he was a young lad waiting for his chance."
