He left for Southampton, saw them relegated, and after flitting from club to club trying to impress he has now moved to Scotland.
The 25-year-old left-back has penned a two-year deal with Rangers, despite interest from the Premiership and admitting he knows next to nothing about Scottish football.
Celtic tried to lure him north of the border during the January transfer window but he was not tempted by the offer.
He said: "I played against Celtic for Newcastle in a pre-season game.
Celtic were interested but I just decided not to go. I didn't think at that time Celtic were right for me. Now that we are in a new season Rangers could be good for me.
"I've heard about the Rangers and Celtic game. I watched the derby and am excited about the prospect of playing in that game."
"I really didn't think Rangers were as big as what I've seen today. I've really been impressed by the club and what I've seen around the club. As soon as I came here and saw the stadium I knew that was the stage I wanted to be on. I could have stayed in the Premiership, but playing in the European Champions League for me is important and I'm sure it is for the club as well. Rangers are a good club and I'm sure I will enjoy my time here."
