Blast At Luque By Toon Striker

OK, we all know the Spanish striker sees the Premiership as "tough", and we even held a poll on this site to see how long he would last in his very first Reserve match last season. He had been dropped from the first team squad by Glenn Roeder and it was obvious the player didn't fancy a stretch in the Reserves. The first tackle he made, on 13 minutes, was hardly a touch but it was enough to see him carried off.

As a youngster from the same Gosforth school as Shearer, Chopra dreamed the Geordie dream as he was capped by England at every level up to the Under-21s. But after nine starts and 21 as sub, he realised others were being put before him. And Luque was one.

Chopra: "Of course, it's tough to realise your United career is over but I've lived the dream.

"It's tough for local lads up here. Shola Ameobi has found that too. We are always the easiest to drop. Newcastle are a buying club, especially when it comes to strikers. They play an attacking game and the fans demand big name signings to excite them.

"Shearer is a legend and it was a privilege to be able to play alongside him. He was an inspiration, always willing to help me if I had a little problem.

"Kluivert was hard to understand. The guy won the European Cup at 17 with Ajax, had a brilliant career for a long time at Barcelona, and is Holland's record goalscorer in internationals. He could have become a legend here, but he didn't seem interested. He wasn't bothered yet only a couple of seasons previously he'd been the best. I couldn't understand that.

"Luque has had his problems. I look at him, think about how much I care for Newcastle, and wonder why I'm gone and so far he is still here!"
