Our mates over on www.TalkOfTheTyne.net are not shy in coming forward, but they certainly have a point when they say: "Qualifying for a competition is NOT success - winning a cup IS!"
www.TalkOfTheTyne.net:
The Journal and Chronicle said a couple of weeks ago that Graeme Souness had "won over the Toon Army".
I don't know where those reporters drink, but there is as much tension on Tyneside as there has been all season. And comments from Souness that he would prefer a "top four" finish in the Premiership to winning the Carling Cup - "a view many fans would take exception to" - proves one point. He obviously hasn't glanced at the history of the club and seen how long it has been since we won a domestic trophy.
Qualifying for a competition is NOT success - winning a cup IS!
Souness: "The team is up for this competition. We will get a reaction [to defeat at Everton]. We had a lengthy meeting yesterday and contrary to what I have read there was no shouting. But the general consensus was we let ourselves down in the second half. We should have had one goal in the first period but the disappointing thing was the response as soon as we conceded that goal. It can't happen again. We have to have a more positive response when we go behind."
