His reasoning was that Bolton were willing to cut Newcastle's wage bill, by taking the midfielder back to the Reebok.
As Bolton fans vented their anger on our message board, Nolan returned the compliment by refusing to go back to his old club ... not that Chris Hughton wanted to lose him.
Now Hughton says Nolan can be the man to spearhead Newcastle United’s return to the top flight.
Chris Hughton: “Kevin has contributed so much for us so far this season.
“He’s the sort of player who can drive us on this season and hopefully take us to where we want to go.
“He’s been a big player for us. I have to say he’s one of a few players who have done a job.
“He’s scoring goals and getting into those positions that cause defences a problem.
“I am delighted with that sort of performance – especially in this division.
“It gives us something extra. Kevin’s attitude can rub off on our midfielders and that has been the case with Danny Guthrie, who has also scored a couple of goals.
“That’s a great contribution from our midfield so far.
“Hopefully we can keep that up.”
