The Toon anchor man looks poised to sign a new one-year extension to his contract at St James' Park, a move that would effectively end interest from both Wanderers and local rivals Wigan Athletic, who were both hoping to pick up a bargain.

Yesterday's contract talks progressed without any significant hitches, with only a couple of minor clauses to be ironed out.
