The 27-year-old joined his home-town club on a season-long loan deal from Real Madrid in August, but is now understood to have agreed to commit his future to the Teesiders.

Boro have agreed to pay Real 10million Euros - around £6.7million - for the ex-Newcastle defender.

Woodgate had a miserable two years at the Bernabeu Stadium as injuries left him struggling to establish himself in Spanish football.
