The 28-year-old midfielder limped out of Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Wigan before half-time, but Souness is hopeful he could yet be fit for Sunday's derby clash with Sunderland.

"It's not as bad as we feared, but let's see how he goes in the next few days," he told the club's official website.

"There's no great swelling on the knee, which is a good sign, so we are hoping it's not too serious."
