Adam Armstrong has the ability to “excite” St James’s Park in the years to come, according to Alan Pardew ... but if ever we needed a big pair of shoulders to wear Wor Jackie's shirt ... it's NOW!
The striker – who turned 17 yesterday – is to be rewarded for his progress with a new long-term contract at the club.
Armstrong has been prolific at Under-18 and Under-21 level so far this season, but in recent weeks he has been sat on the bench - in Premier League games - and many wonder "why has it come to this?"
A 16-year old our striker option?
No disrepect to the kid, he must be loving it, but let's put this into perspective.
The striker position at St James' Park is one of myth and legend. It was even too tough for Michael Owen, for God's sake.
And Armstrong's inclusion only came AFTER the disappointment of the January transfer window, and I still believe it was Alan Pardew's pathetic demonstration to Mike Ashley that said "look Mike, our squad is so small it's come to this - 16 year old kids."
The Newcastle-born player has found himself on the first-team bench for the past three games - since the window closed.
Armstrong could again be among the substitutes for the visit of Tim Sherwood’s side.
Pardew – who admits he came close to putting Armstrong on against Chelsea on Saturday – is hopeful Armstrong can fulfill his undoubted potential at the club.
In the last SEVEN Premier League games Newcastle have failed to score in SIX!
So let's face it, the kid can do no worse than the rest of the strikers.
Chelsea 3 Newcastle 0
Newcastle 0 Sunderland 3
Norwich 0 Newcastle 0
West Ham 1 Newcastle 3

Alan Pardew: “I do think that he’s got an ability that excites.
“That’s something that Newcastle fans love. He’s an exciting player, in my opinion.
“He isn’t ready yet, but the injuries have forced his inclusion in my group. It’s still good experience for him.
“It’s a tall order for him to impact next year at 17, but it’s possible for him.
“I think Adam would have perhaps played maybe played a part of a game by now in any other era.
“He’s got a little bit more to do. He’s not the finished article by any stretch of the imagination.
“But the injuries are such that I’m giving him a taste of it at the moment. On Saturday, it was probably the closest he came (to coming on). I was thinking ‘maybe I should just give him 10 minutes’.
“Really and truly, he needs to gain experience in the dressing room around senior players. He’s turned 17, and I’m trying to accelerate his experience.
“He’s somebody we have high hopes for.
“We’ll hopefully secure his long-term future here in the next few days.”
