Guimaraes doubles up at St James’ Park
Newcastle United left it late to beat Leicester City on Sunday afternoon, Bruno Guimaraes scoring with the last meaningful touch of the game to seal a 2-1 win that extends the home run to no less than five victories in succession.
The home side fell behind to a much-changed Leicester City side on 20 minutes when a well worked corner was swept in by Lookman as the wingers low strike squirmed under Dubravka.
Newcastle struck back on the half-hour when the Foxes vulnerability from set pieces once again came to the fore. Burn got a header on a Shelvey corner, Schmeichel failed to grab cleanly and Bruno poked the ball home underneath the Leicester keeper. The goal was initially ruled out by the on-field referee but after a VAR check he overturned his decision as there was no infringement.
In a low-key second half Leicester looked to grab the initiative by sending on substitutes Maddison, Barnes and Iheanacho but despite getting on top they were unable to create clear cut chances to win the game.
With the match heading for a draw there was drama in the fifth and final minute of stoppage time. Willock, returning from injury as a substitute, advanced brilliantly down the left from the halfway line and his deflected cross was met with a powerful diving header by Bruno to win the game. The Brazilian is quickly becoming a fans favourite at St James’ Park and the goal sent the Gallowgate into raptures.
Newcastle face Crystal Palace at home on Wednesday evening, a win would see the Toon climb above their visitors in the Premier League table and Eddie Howe’s side are now within 3 points of the top half of the division.
