Broken Cheekbones And Coloured Tights

In a week that has had FIFA issue the new rule: "If any player wears tights they must be the same colour as the shorts" ... I wonder what 'Big Bad' John McNamee would say about it.

I was brought up in a different era, I'm sorry to say.

In my day (1960s) we had McNamee, John McGrath and Wyn Davies willing to kick anyone who kicked them, and that was the way back then.

We played 60 games the season we won the Fairs Cup, and there is Steve Harper today saying: "We are pleased for the two week break before we play Stoke because we have tired legs".

We only played FIVE games in February!

During the Fairs Cup final 1st leg against Ujpest Dosza, Wyn Davies broke his cheekbone, but said from his hospital bed: "I'm playing in the second leg, trust me! I will be telling the manager that."

So back to the current day.

Shola Ameobi: "I know I've taken a big risk because the surgeon has told me if it does go again he won't operate because it would be too dangerous.

"The mask is made of the material they use in bullet-proof glass and it's see-through so aesthetically it's not too bad.

"It is moulded to my face, but when you do move around and sweat that creates a bit of movement that ideally you wouldn't want.

"Having something on your face you're not used to is strange. It's not so much the fact it's there, it's making sure you don't think about it and just get on with it.

"Any little thing that distracts you like that will put you off your game, and it's trying to get over that mental hurdle and just dealing with it."
