Burton manager Nigel Clough believes his side finally got what they deserved on Friday night after ending a frustrating week with a 2-0 win over high-flying Birmingham.
Brum could have cut the gap with Newcastle to two points.
Birmingham-born duo Lloyd Dyer and Jamie Ward netted in each half to secure victory for the Brewers over former boss Gary Rowett at the Pirelli Stadium.
The triumph came after Burton were held to a goalless draw by Wigan last weekend and then beaten at Ipswich on Tuesday, and Clough felt it was just reward for his side's performances having played three times in seven days.
"That is the reward for our efforts over the week," he said.
"We feel we should have seven points comfortably from three tough games but that is the next stage.
"Quite often this season we haven't got what we deserve but tonight we could have won by more than two. That is the next stage for us, to really get the results that our performances deserve."
