Supporters have grown fond of the ex-Newcastle boss after watching him guide Blues to the play-offs despite all of the turmoil off the field.
And 82-year-old Govan, a long-standing fan himself after spending five seasons at the club between 1953 and 1958, believes he will continue to be cherished should he rebuff any possible advances and stay on.
Although Blues appear to have rebuffed interest from neighbours West Brom Hughton’s name is still being linked to fresh vacancies at Swansea and Norwich City.
Alex Govan: “I think he is the best manager we have had in a long time.
“I’ve never met the chap personally, despite being at St Andrew’s quite a few times, but he impresses me by the way he plays.
“He’s managed to get a lot out of players that I didn’t think had it in them – that’s a sign of a good manager.
“Take the big man, Zigic, for example. I was delighted for them when he scored four goals in a game.
“I watched him a couple of times and I thought he wasn’t cut out for it, especially for the money.
“But if the manager can get that chap to do that he’s got to be a good manager, because I couldn’t think of anyone else who could.
“It would be great for the club if he decided against a move.”
