A Newcastle penalty and subsequent Birmingham red card kick-started the game at St James’ Park into life, as the hosts ended their five game run without a win to leave the League Cup winners lingering uncomfortably above the relegation zone with just two games left to play.
Shola Ameobi gave Newcastle the lead from the penalty spot on the 36th minute, after referee Chris Foy spotted a handball by Birmingham defender Liam Ridgewell. Kevin Nolan’s on-target close range shot was blocked by Ridgewell’s elbow and the Birmingham defender was given a straight red card by Foy, leaving the Blues to overcome the one-goal deficit with only 10 men.
The goal initiated from a debatably-awarded corner which produced a mass goalline scramble, with the ball falling to Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini whose powerful shot was palmed away onto the post by Birmingham goalkeeper Ben Foster before falling to Nolan.
Newcastle defender Steven Taylor, who was making his 150th appearance in a black and white shirt, then doubled the Magpies’ lead seven minutes later after heading into the back of the net from a corner.
Taylor made a good run and a fantastic climb to meet the oncoming corner and head in, although Birmingham’s Sebastian Larsson would have hoped to have done better on the goal line, as the ball hit his shin before falling into the back of the net.
Early bath | Birmingham appeal in vain as Newcastle as Ridgewell sees red
Newcastle looked to be in full control of the match as 10-man Birmingham struggled, with their glovesman Ben Foster pulling off some fine saves to keep the Midlanders in the game.
However, on the stroke of half-time Lee Bowyer gave Birmingham hope of an unlikely comeback finding the back of the net after some abysmal defending from Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul.
His goalkeeping counterpart Foster produced a long ball down the field towards Birmingham team mate Cameron Jerome, who was too easily allowed to skip into the box by Krul.
Coloccini looked to have come to Newcastle’s rescue, producing a fantastic tackle to prevent Jerome firing into an open Newcastle net. However, his clearance fell to Bowyer who managed to smash the ball into the back of the Newcastle goal, despite a slight deflection off an unlucky Collocini.
England goalkeeper Ben Foster deserves massive credit after an outstanding performance throughout the game.
In the later stages of the first half the Birmingham shot-stopper produced a terrific save from Peter Lovenkrands, after a clever Nolan flick found the Danish forward, and shortly after the former Manchester United goalkeeper produced another sublime save, blocking a powerfully struck Nolan shot.
Newcastle were the dominant side in the second-half producing numerous decent chances, but they were unable to find the finishing product, particularly past the prolific Foster.
Ten men Birmingham were pushed for chances, the best opportunity for the equaliser falling to Swedish midfielder Larsson on the 80th minute.
Newcastle glovesman Krul, who had relatively little to do throughout the game, dropped a Jean Beausejour cross at the feet of Larsson, who was unable to convert, scooping the ball over the bar and with it went Birmingham's hopes of rescuing anything from the game.

This book is a collection of the 100 Greatest Newcastle United players of all time, as voted for by NewcastleUtd-Mad.co.uk readers and a panel of journalists who contribute to the website.
The players are in an order of five-per-chapter, counting down from 100 to Newcastle United's greatest ever player (as viewed by the author), but the whole point of the book is for You (the reader) to decide who goes where.
The list is not, by any means, definitive. As with all books of this nature, whether it be "Greatest Albums"; "Best Movies Of All Time"; or "Top 100 Pin-Ups Of The Year" . . . no two people have exactly the same opinion.
There will be controversy over who is on the list, and chances are, more controversy over who is not.
Here are the best of the best. I have painted the picture with each player's profile. Where they end up in the league of Nufc's Greatest is up to you.
Because You have the final word.
