Despite his Mackem connections, Bridges used to tour the Bigg Market with fellow Geordie boy Lee Clark, and if ever I wanted a 'Mackem' to be a success at St James' Park it was that lad.
Sadly injury robbed him of a brilliant career, and although he achieved his boyhood wish of playing in black and white, we should have nabbed him before the Mackems got their hands on him.

The 29-year-old played for Carlisle earlier in his career before joining the Tigers in 2006.
However, he was unable to establish himself as a first-team regular and spent six months of last term in Australia with Sydney FC.
John Ward: "I think this is an excellent signing for the club, and I think many other people will be feeling exactly the same way.
"He was very popular throughout his previous spell here, and I'm sure it'll be that way for him again.
"Michael was desperate to come back to Brunton Park if at all possible and I'm really pleased that we were able to sort this out, both for him and for Carlisle United."

Born in North Shields, Newcastle fan, but started his career with Sunderland. Highly thought of in Mackemland scoring 16 goals in 79 league appearances. But was hit by injuries and they sold him to Leeds where he hardly played for four season befoe loaning him to Newcastle. Only made one start, in a UEFA Cup tie, and never made the grade. Returned to Leeds then Sunderland bought him back.
