The old saying "once you leave Old Trafford you are on the slide", and that was very much the case as Butt did himself no favours with half-hearted displays for both Newcastle and Birmingham when he left Man Utd.
The fans of both clubs didn't take to him and he would have left Newcastle a long time ago if only the clubs who were willing to give him another chance could pay is massive wages.
However, Butt has come of age in black and white this season, and he was thrilled to mark his captaincy debut with a win in Belgium over Zulte Waregem.
Butt: "I enjoyed being captain of this club. It's a great honour and something any player would enjoy.
"I have done it for Man United a few times, when Roy Keane and Gary Neville were out, but it's so pleasing to do it with a win for Newcastle.
"It was a good result away from home. The performance was not the best, but I think some of that was down to the heavy pitch, which did not help.
"It got a bit sloppy at some stages, but overall we have to happy. It was job done for us really.
"My game is tackling and winning the ball, so after I had been booked, I had to change my game a bit. I do not think it was a booking. It was a bad decision, but you have to get on with it."
