The news comes as a blow given that Butt was in line to return to the squad against Arsenal on Sunday.
Butt has been sorely missed in the heart of our midfield since he last played against Sochaux in the Uefa Cup back in November.
Jermaine Jenas threatened to make Butt’s absence go unnoticed but has sadly suffered a downturn in form of late. A player such as Butt who, although offering little in attack, is vital to breaking up opposition attacks and is a vocal influence upon some of his less influential colleagues.
It remains to be seen when he will return and whether or not this injury will be a recurring problem given the worrying period of time he looks like taking to recover.
