Campbell was sent on in the 86th minute and the 17-year-old was involved in Papiss Demba Cisse’s dramatic injury-time winner.

Campbell rolled the ball to a better-placed Sylvain Marveaux, who found Cisse.

Alan Pardew: “He deserved his little chance, and he was involved in the goal.

“He passed the ball to Marveaux – it was was a very simple pass.

“In his mind it’ll be the greatest pass he’s ever played in his career, but he’ll play a lot better ones than that.

“I had no qualms (about putting him on). I know we haven’t got too many (strikers) in the squad. He played his part.

“It’s up to him how good he is. There is nothing to get carried away about.

“He hasn’t smashed one in the top corner, but hopefully he will.

“Nobody loves putting young players on more than myself.

“I’ve gave Oxlaide-Chamberlain his debut at 16 at Southampton, Mark Noble with West Ham at 16, and Jonjo Shelvey at 16 with Charlton. Adam Campbell’s just as good.”

Campbell – who came up through the ranks at United’s Academy – made his club debut in a Europa League qualifier against Atromitos in August.
