For all his undoubted talents, Sammy Ameobi is one of those players that does not have a clearly defined position.
He is often stationed wide, but he is not a traditional winger in any sense.
Ameobi is not particularly renowned for his rapid turn of pace or the quality of his delivery, he is more of a languid number 10.
In that respect, maybe he would have been better off at Wolves, where he would have been a like-for-like replacement for the recently departed Bakary Sako.
We do not yet know how Cardiff intend to use Ameobi but it will be a struggle.
With the unsuccessful loan spells of Wilfried Zaha and Ravel Morrison still fresh in the mind, players that were either wasted or wasters, depending on your stance, there is certainly some valid cause for concern.
Ameobi’s Newcastle team mate Haris Vuckic failed to thrive, probably because, like Sammy, he blows hot and cold.
You never know what you are going to get.
Ameobi is the kind of player that Cardiff fans have traditionally found divisive.
In short, it’s a risky signing but so many of them are.
Some at Cardiff are surprised that a Premier League club did not pick him up, especially with his contract entering its final few weeks recently.
But Newcastle fans know the reason why.
If Ameobi fails to grasp the opportunity or if Cardiff struggle to get him on the ball and play to his strengths, then it could prove to be the latest in a long line of loan signing anti-climaxes.
Either way, his plight is sure to provide the narrative of the season.
