Carver has been installed as the bookmakers’ favourite to be Newcastle United next permanent manager.
Carver leads Steve McClaren, whose odds have shortened significantly this week, and one-time favourite Remi Garde.
Michael Laudrup, who has shortened to 12/1 recently, is the fourth favourite while Bernd Schuster – whose name has been dismissed by Newcastle – is fifth in the running at 16/1.
Carver is as low as 11/10 favourite with Skybet, and 7/4 with bet365. The United caretaker chief seems likely to have the job until the summer if the hints Lee Charnley dropped are correct – but as a permanent boss? That seems unlikely.
Frank De Boer seemed to suggest he would be interested in the Newcastle job but he is out at 14/1 while Tim Sherwood is at 20/1.
Among the real outsiders, Christophe Galtier is the big drifter. He’s now 66/1 after being among the front-runners early on. Lucien Favre is 50/1 while Paul Clement, Real Madrid’s assistant manager, is 33/1.
