Jack Charlton (talking to the Chronicle): "I would love to see him (Alan Shearer) become manager of Newcastle United one day.

"I always say to people who work in telly that if you do it for too long you can be forgotten.

"You have to get the balance right. I worked for TV, but I also managed at the same time.

"I had to pack the TV in because I was too busy with management.

"I am sure he will be faced with this decision one day - it's either TV or football.

"He's probably a wealthy lad so he won't be too worried about TV work.

"I think they make it difficult for people to be managers now.

"They have to go to Lilleshall and get badges and qualifications before they get a job.

"But if I was to pick a player or two to be manager, he would be one of them.

"Alan was also a good, honest pro who knows the business inside out.

"He's the perfect lad. I saw him the other night at his tribute dinner and he was straight over to say hello.

"He's that sort of lad - he's very approachable."
