Allardyce, we hear, knows all about the England international and his problems, and it looks as though the new boss will sort out Dyer's future sooner rather than later.
Like the now-departed Titus Bramble, Dyer was booed off in the final home match of the season against Blackburn Rovers, and his body language after he scored at Watford on Sunday was not that of a player who wants to stay with United.
The rumour in London is if Frank Lampard leaves Chelsea for Real Madrid in the summer as expected, Dyer could by-pass the offer from Tottenham and move straight to Stamford Bridge.
But would Dyer pass a medical? His injury history is shocking, to say the least, and he has been walking like an old man in recent matches. Although that could have something to do with his desire to get away, which is becoming obvious by the day. Hardly a player to give 100% when he's out of sorts, and he tends to look for places to hide when he's carrying a knock.
Apparently Shepherd says he will leave Allardyce to talk to Michael Owen, amid talk he could leave the club after managing just 14 appearances in two seasons. The situation has hardly been helped by the chairman's U-Tube video saying he would "carry Owen on his back" to Liverpool if they wanted him. Something Owen was furious about!
As well as Owen being Allardyce's top priority he also has dressing- room rebels Obafemi Martins and Charles N'Zogbia to sort out.
Shepherd, who we believe was "advised" to keep his mouth shut at the Allardyce press conference for fear of upsetting anyone else (hence the bizarre cracked ribs story), has finally found his voice again.
Shepherd: "It was important to bring someone in quickly. It is a revolving door and when Glenn resigned we did not have much time.
"We have the whole summer to plan ahead and, believe me, we will need every minute of every day to do that.
"Every manager who has come here has always done his best, or tried to do his best. Nobody came here and tried to do their worst.
"It just has not worked out for them. It is quite simple.
"Glenn deserved a chance after last season and we gave him that chance, but it did not work out for him for various reasons which everybody knows."
