Alan Pardew: "At the time I thought James Perch got fouled, if I'm honest, and I was a little bit angry at the ref because I didn't think he gave me much all night really.
"Having said that, I mentioned to him at the end and then I had to go back and apologise because when I saw it on the replay I could see it wasn't a foul. So he got that right.
"I thought the lads were terrific.
"They would have a got a lot of confidence from that. I thought we were as every bit as good as Manchester United for an away team.
"I was desperate to win, we wanted to win tonight.
"We took the conscious decision to have a go. It left us a little but open at times but I thought it was a great game and we perhaps deserved a little bit more than what we got.
"I'm really pleased for the players but disappointed for the club because I felt we deserved a little bit more.
"It just shows you, I thought that a goal would change the whole look of that player because that's what they do to strikers. It's set him up for Saturday [away to Reading].
"We were pressing, we had Papiss on the sideline and if we could get him on there at 1-0 he's always going to get a chance and, if he gets, it he'll score. The overhead kick was magnificent - a highlight of the evening for me.
"Colo is a bit sore whether he'll be enough for Saturday I don’t know. [Mike] Williamson I really shouldn't have played tonight because he's had some many games but I didn't have any choice either - we're a bit short at centre-half."
