Cisse agreed a five-and-a-half year deal with the Magpies in a £9million move from German outfit Freiburg.
The Senegal striker claimed earlier in the week that Sunderland were one of the clubs interested in his services.
“I’m flattered by the interest of Sunderland and other clubs,” he said.
But although Steve Bruce had considered Cisse in the summer during Sunderland’s search for attacking reinforcements, the ex-Black Cats boss admitted the price tag was way out of reach for the poor cash-strapped Wearsiders.
Cisse didn’t find his way onto Sunderland’s hitlist this month either, with Martin O’Neill being told he has to sell to buy.
Just as well really ... because the agent of Papiss Demba Cisse said today: "There was only one club he was going to sign for, and that was because Alan Pardew never gave up the race for him.
"Sunderland were never in the running."
