The 32-year old intends to move into a coaching role before he turns 35.
Lee Clark: "For the last few years, as I've got older, I've tried to set myself a strict target and follow a certain career path. As a result I've earmarked next season as my last as a player. After that I want to focus fully on the coaching and management side of things. I've got my Uefa B licence and I'm halfway through the A licence - I hope to be assessed for that early next year.
"If I can get that then I'll apply for the Pro Licence, which you need to earn within a certain period of time if you want to be a Premiership manager.
"I've always been interested in coaching. It isn't just something that has crept up on me as I've grown older. I used to help out with boys clubs' teams even as a young lad and I've developed a keener interest since then. It's been in my mind for a long time."
Speaking at Wallsend Boys Club's 40th Anniversary bash he added: "To say I am delighted to come back to Newcastle is the understatement of the year! It has been a fantastic few months for me personally and I did not expect it all. I knew about the Wallsend Anniversary dinner for a long time and I never thought I would be attending as a Newcastle player."
