Fulham, now managed by Speed’s former Wales team-mate Chris Coleman, head the queue with Middlesbrough and Cardiff City, bankrolled by Sam Hammam also keen.
After the season Speed had last time out it is no surprise that clubs should be interested, but even taking his age into consideration cashing in would be a mistake.
The Wales captain is one of the few experienced players in the squad and has rarely been omitted by Sir Bobby when fit. Results without him last season offered the clearest possible evidence of his importance to the team.
Hopefully this is just paper talk, as Speed is one of the last players we can afford to lose.
