Steven Taylor also has a fighting chance of returning from injury to line up against Stoke, where the axe could fall on out-of-form defender Coloccini.

Shearer: "We'll look at what we've got.

"We might have one or two back from injury, but we don't know that yet.

"Bassong was nearly there. It would have been a bit of a risk to play him, hence the reason he didn't play.

"By being sensible, and not playing him, we're hoping he'll be available for Saturday.

"Steven Taylor's a little bit further behind, but we're still hopeful that he'll be OK."
