Match report from the afternoon away draw versus Hull City

It was stalemate at the KC Stadium as neither Hull City nor Newcastle United could find a breakthrough in the FA Cup third round.

Michael Turner came closest for Hull as his second-half header was controversially adjudged not to have crossed the line, substitute Jonas Gutierrez was the visitors' main threat but still he couldn't prevent a replay.

Geovanni tried his luck for Hull early on from, but his tame right-footed effort from 20 yards was easily palmed away by keeper Shay Given.

Michael Owen had a chance soon after as he latched on to a piercing through ball, but keeper Matt Duke did enough to force the ex-Real Madrid man to send his shot wide of the mark.

Andy Carroll was next to come close for Newcastle as he chased on to a ball over the top, beat off two defenders and fired in a right-footed shot, but Duke was there again to keep the scores level with a great one-handed save.

The home-side nearly broke the deadlock towards the end of the half as clever play from Craig Fagan down the left allowed him to find space for a cross into the path of Daniel Cousin, whose first-time effort from eight yards saw the ball hit the upright and land safely in the hands of keeper Given.

Given had to keep his side in the game ten minutes into the second half as a Stelios Giannakouplos cross was well controlled in the box by Cousin, who then turned and fired in a shot that looked destined for the bottom corner, but the Irish number one was equal to it.

Given had to make another great save midway through the half as Geovanni hit a blistering free-kick from just outside the box which saw the ball fly towards the top corner, but the Newcastle number one managed to turn the ball the ball away to safety.

The home side then thought they'd taken the lead as a Dean Marney corner was met by the head of Turner, whose effort saw the ball hit the frame of the goal and bounce down into the arms of Given, the home side protested the ball had gone over the line but the assistant referee ruled in favour of the Magpies.

Marney had a great chance to nick the game for Hull at the end as Sam Ricketts found him unmarked in the box with a neat cross from the right, but the Tigers midfielder could only send his header well wide of the post.
