The 30-year-old has been on the transfer list since the summer and hasn’t featured at all this season after slipping behind Jonathan Woodgate, Titus Bramble and Andy O’Brien in the first-team reckoning.
Although the club were initially seeking a fee of around £1million for Dabizas, the chance to move on a free transfer and seal his place in the Greek squad for Euro 2004 is the least he deserves after five years of loyal service.
Signed by Kenny Dalglish from Olympiakos for £1.3million in March 1998 the centre-back went on to make 176 appearances, including two FA Cup finals, and scored 14 times.
Nobody could claim that Dabizas was the new Bobby Moore, but at the same time nobody could justifiably complain about his commitment or work-rate and there is no doubt that he wore the shirt with pride.
And then of course there was that goal at Sunderland.
